Yesterday I started up the 8N and was greeted by a engine which now has a knock. Up till this point it has been running great. What are possible causes? and repairs?

Thanks

I have a serious sounding knock when the 3-pt is raised to the upper stops. Goes away when the hitch is lowered any amount. I've quit worrying about it. Good luck.

If the engine was not knocking before, and suddenly started all at once upon firing up, there is a good possibility that a sleeve has become adrift (loose). This is a bummer, and must be fixed before using the tractor, but is not necessarily fatal. Good luck.

Cut off a piece of water hose and use it like a stethoscope to listen to various locations on the engine on both sides. Try and isolate the location of the knock and then you may know the rest of the story!

Could be a bent pulley to a loose flywheel to a cracked crankshaft, and a hundred other possibilities.

Could you elaborate a bit more to help us?

What is a knock, to one person is a tap or ping to another. If it is a deep type of knock, (the dreaded knock) it could be a defective bearing either on the rod journal or main journal. Other things can cause knocks, excessive clearance in the valve train etc. How is your oil pressure? Sometimes, with a spun bearing or excessively worn bearing there will be a corresponding oil pressure drop. Then there is piston slap... well that is another story... I hope your problem is not serious... It takes experience to tell from the sound what it might be.. Good Luck
