Anyone found a good way to keep birds out of pole buildings? They are making a mess out of everything with the crap they are hauling in and the crap they are dropping. The cats are too lazy and I don't like the idea of bullet holes in the roof.

just patch the holes after you get done shooting.

or...

do without a roof - the bird's won't stay then!

If it is four-sided so you can close it up, a $30 .177 cal pellet rifle at wallmart, a flashlight and a cool night work great! used to have sparrows in our heymow when I was a kid. used to go out in the winter time and shoot them out of the peaks using the flashlight and the air rifles. Great fun and really keeps the population down if you can keep it closed most of the time.

Alot of the solution depends on the type of birds doing the nasty. They're looking for a home. There are some species that prefer a large building, but most like something a bit more secure. If the pole barn is three sided, there's not much you can do. If you've got four walls, you can decrease your problem by hanging up some bird houses in the area. (outside the building of course) The owl scenarino is pretty effective, and realitively cheap. While doing ADC work in suburban Chicago, I had to eliminate a number of problem pidgeons. I can give you the solution I used via e-mail, but am not comfortable posting it here.

I had a similar problem with birds in the sofets of my house. The mess they made was awful. I used 2x4's with LOTS of big and small nails through the boards. The birds couldn't roost let alone nest there. Its been two years now, and no birds. Good luck. (a bowl of anti freeze would work)

Is it that the cats are lazy or can't easily reach the birds? If it's an access thing, maybe nailing up some boards that the cats can hang out on will help. Just a SWAG.

1. Get new cats. 2. Try bird shot or rat shot. It is very fine shot; they make it in 22 caliber and you can safely shoot inside without making holes in the roof. Would reccomend eye protection. Good luck,
ray

Is that "eye protection" from the bird shot or the bird crap? :-)

You can use poison roost paint, sticky roost paint, sharp spikes made to keep birds from roosting or the owl seems to work pretty well. Around our hog houses, we used to use a galvanized, 4-armed roost that was filled with systemic poison that the sparrows absorbed through their feet. It took a while to see a decline in the sparrow population.

I use a inflatable owl hanging from the center of the barn, works great for me. They can be found at large garden supplies.

I had some toy snakes laying around at one time, but they kept giving me the "jumpies", and my neighbors didn't find them humorous.
