Who can solve this? My 8n ran fine then ran rough and quit. I have cleaned and rebuilt carb changed points and condenser rotor and cap. Motor will run for a few seconds and quit as if it is not getting gas but it is. there is good spark and it does not backfire. compression is ok. I heard that the dist plate can ground out but it appears tight and the engine does run for a few seconds.

I agree with Matt definitely sounds like fuel starvation.Try disconnecting the fuel line from the carb and let the gas flow. If it stops then the clog is in your sediment bowl if not then you have something wrong in the carb.

Russ, If it runs at all, the distributor plate is not shorted. Sounds like a clogged fuel line or clogged valve on the sediment bowl. Hope this helps. Matt

Russ,
Check your sediment bowl. I found wood peices in my gas tank. Probably dropped during a gas check. I back blew air through it first and it ran ok for a while. That told me the problem. I removed and cleaned the tank and it's OK now. Good Luck!
