I get some bouncing of implements from time to time, especially when raised all the way. I have noticed the main control spring not only turns by hand, but has about 1/8" free play. Finally got around to adjusting it, but when there is nothing attached to the hitch, the free play is gone and the spring is too tight to turn by hand.

Which way do I adjust it? Do I loosen the yoke to allow it to turn without weight, or tighten it to get rid of the free play when an implement is attached?

Also, the yoke's threads must be rusty because it doesn't want to turn in either direction. Will I mess something up by more assertive persuasion?

The spring needs to be adjusted with nothing on the lift.

Do not us excessive force on the yoke if it is seized as they often are after years of not being moved. To adjust the yoke you will have to heat the female portion of the yoke till it is red hot with a cutting torch or heating tip.

I don't think that the jumping (hiccuping) is caused by the spring adjustment though. You may have a leak in the system such as the piston rings of the ram cyl etc.
