the battery on my 2n is connected as a negative ground, the generator does not appear to charge(previous owner said it was weak), but it starts and runs ok. would the starter even function if the polarity were reversed?

Ron..... this is a FAQ, you might want to check the archives for more detailed answers.

The front mount 2N was factory designed to be positive ground for many reasons. It can be re-polarized to negative ground for many stupid reasons. (grin) The starter don't care positive ground/negative ground. If you have headlights, they don't care eather. BUT the ignition coil does care. You will loose about 25% of your sparkies peak voltage. 6 volt N-Tractors ignition system is just barely adquate without much sparkies to spare.

As to the "weak charging generator". The ampmeter is only a general indicator of generator output. Unless you are keeping the the battery charged by house mains charger, since it starts and runs ok, I'm not certain your generator is "weak" but can be miss-adjusted.

Check the I&T FO-4 repair manual for generator instructions and also for "re-polarizing".

Hope this helps..... ...Dell
