How does the starter button next to the shifter come out of an 8N. Does it unscrew? Do I have to take the tranny cover off? Should I be on the look out for parts to fall into the tranny during removal?

You must pull the top off the transmission to replace the starter button. Put the shifter in neutral and clean off any dirt etc from the area around the cover so as not to contaminate the oil. Remove all the bolts around the perimeter of the cover and lift the cover straight up and off.
There is a lock plate that is bent over the nut that secures the start button to the cover plate.
It can be bought at the local Ford dealer.(New Holland) You know it irks me to know that Ford didn't think any more of it's old tractors than to turn them into hay balers."New Holland"!

Look at the tranny cover plate and you will see a tab protruding on the back edge. Under that is a hole which contains a small spring and detente ball. Remove the cover carefully so that the spring doesn't spring out or be pulled out stuck to the cover and fall into the tranny. The ball probably won't come out unless it's stuck to the spring.

Only annoyance I found with this job is the bolt on the tranny cover behind the shifter under the dash can be hard to access.

Good luck.
