After a few cranks on my 8N 12180 the starter bendix fails to engage. Pulling the starter off or just out far enough to turn the drive gear a little will buy a few more trys, then it just spins till removed again. It looks clean, not sticky, appears to have same clearances and parts as the other one campared to. What am I missing?

Once the bendix is engaged, the only way it will become disengaged is when the tractor starts up. You don't say if the bendix is engaged when you take out the starter. If it is not engaged when you remove the starter, then it's probably a bendix problem described in the other post. If it's engaged, then it's probably the ring gear spinning around the flywheel. Put a chalk mark on the ring gear and flywheel and see if the ring gear moves. My 2 cents.

You must have the old type bendix.Get the "improved ratchet type"($32.00 from Central Tractor)New Holland (Ford)sells one that is a fits-all type but you have to grind off a portion of the motor casting to get it in the hole.(This is the actual directions that came with the gear- took me about an hour to do it.)

That's what my old dad says to do also. Guess I'll have to. Thanks
