my 8n wouldnt start.most of the ignition was in bad shape.i replaced cap ,rotor,plugs,wires,coil.i drained the old gas and put in new.changed oil,filter and greased complete.ought to run great,no!i had no spark to plugs but had power to coil.took cap off and squirted cleaner inside to get rid of crud.i forgot to turn ignition off and when i put coil in it started a fire,nothing burnt to bad.why will it not get spark to plugs,points look good?

Based on my experience, the problem could be that the spring contact on the bottom of the coil which mates with the condensor contact is going off sideways and grounding on the distributor case. I had to bend it over with a pliers to get it to mate properly without grounding.

Those point have got to be perfectly clean with out a trace of foriegn matter between the mating surfaces.NONE! Also you have to especially particular if it is the front mounted distributor that there is no short circuit. Mighty easy to get something touching something it's not supposed to. If you had a fire around the distributor it could also have damaged the points,especially if they are fabricated of plastic as many replacement point sets are now.

When you look at the points they are clean etc? You must have some power to get it to catch fire. I would suspect the condenser etc. Points are cheap put a new set in and try again.
