This summer at the Oakley MI tractor show I saw an 8n that had the front axle removed, a small 1-2 yard earthmover style scraper mounted on back that attached to the tractor right behind the seat. The steering wheel ran to a valve that controlled two hydraulic cylinders that would allow the vehicle to articulate. The owner said the army would use these to build airstrips on short notice, and they would fit in a cargo plane. Has anyone heard of these strange animals? What is the story on these? Thanks

When I was in my teens, about 1951, I worked at a South Bend Ford Tractor Dealership on the corner of south 31 and Ireland road one summer--Gadbury.

At that time there was a lot of home building going on in an area known as Twyckenham Hills, and we'd see 8N Fords with small "overland scrapers" come in with destroyed transmission-differentials. I think the problem was mostly differentials. I've not seen one since, but at the time I thought there were a lot of these around from all of them we saw. Seems they had a set of drive wheels under the transmission and "webbed" tracks that went over these small wheels and the rear wheels. Details are a little fuzzy, but the talk among the mechanics was that the 8N wasn't built to take this abuse.

There is a picture of a "Dearborn Road Maintainer" on page 171 of the book "Ford Farm Tractors" by Randy Leffingwell, published in 1998 by Motor Books International (MBI). It looks bigger than what you describe, doesn't appear to articulate, but does look like it could move some dirt - even with only 20 horsepower.

Dwight Emstrom has one. He's listed in several of the Leffingwell books on Fords. He took it to the Labor Day Antique Gas Engine (and tractor) Show at Argyle Lake State Park in Colchester, IL a couple of years age. They're pretty impressive (especially in the like-new condition which he restores ALL his Fords). He also has a '39 9N, serial #16!! He's got it polished to a fair-thee-well! Ron

Never saw a Ford but have saw several different styled graders mounted on IH's. Seems an 8N would be a little under powered to move 2yds dirt. Did it have a conversion motor such as a six or eight cyl in it?
I would love to see a picture of it.

The 8N earthmover I saw just had a normal looking 4 cylinder engine.
