I'm looking at page 88 of the Ford Service Manual dealing with reassembly of the rear axle. It says: "rotation of one axle shaft should now cause the other shaft to rotate in the same direction.if not, remove more shims."

Next para says: "shim thickness must be increased until rotation of one shaft causes the other to rotate in the opposite direction."

Can someone explain more precisely what to do? When I rotate one shaft in a forward direction, the opposite shaft rotates in a backwards direction. Play is about .oo5.

Looks like your there. Removing shims at the start causes both axle ends to touch in the center of the ring gear and get preloaded, causing both wheels to turn in the same direction. Then you add shims until the wheels just start to turn in opposite directions (axles just not preloaded) and you have a final axle end play of .002-.006". So it sounds like your adjusted at .005".

I have read that about both wheels going in the same direction after the proper amount of shims has been removed but I'll tell you what I think. I think that is too much preload on the axle bearings. If you have .005 clearance I think I would stop removing shims or else remove a shim of .005 and let it go. Too much preload of the axle bearings will definately cause premature failure of the bearings. Better to have too much clearance than not enough.
