Hello,
By now I'm sure you found out all you need to know about stitching.
However, I do Cast Iron Stitching in Wisconsin.
It works great, can be costly, but it may be worth having a price quote.
A picture is worth a bunch.
Questions? call Greg Zarse 414-530-4152
or e-mail
Thanks, Good luck
Greg

Here is one of several websites on the subject. If you go to www.google.com and search for "metal stitching" you will find several more.

The reference may also be to "stitch welding", a technique intedned to reduce and spread heat stresses. The crack is welded with several short (1/4) "stitches" along its length, with pauses inbetween welds to allow the metal to cool and the weld to adjust. The whole is then closed with a cover bead. There's also "backstitching", an interrupted pattern of several passes of stitch welds.

This engine block is at about the lower limit of thickness that can be effectively repaired with stud/insert type repair techniques. There's not enough wall thickness to adequately support the insert devices.
