Sounds like the #2 and #3 plug wires are crossed.

Just kidding, but they do say that most carb problems are cured with proper ignition or timing.

The screw on the side is the idle screw, the one slanted toward the front is the power screw. Both are adjusted 1 full turn out from closed to start. The power screw must be adjusted at speed under a load. Run the rpm up to about 1500 and lift a large something and you will get close, or just trial and error. Spitting does sound like timing though, not rich or lean.

You might have hit on the problem. We need a digital recorder so we could e-mail the .wav files of the troubled engine and its noises. The only thing I can think of at this time is the new Kodak 260 digital camera which allows sound clips with the picture. However it costs about $600 so that is out. Also Dragon Naturally Speaking software makes a small recorder which also enables recording wav files and uploading to your computer. But it is $400. If you had a laptop you could take the computer to the tractor and setup some recording software to record the tractor then e-mail the wav file. Most sound boards come with recording software.

For me it would be easier to drive the tractor into my den next to my computer than to take everything apart and setup out in the shed. Oh well, just a thought, I will try and settle back down.
