I am putting the pistons/rods back into my 8N. The book says install "with the oil squirt hole in the connecting rod facing toward the front of the engine and the number on the camshaft side of the engine". That's a contridiction! When I took the pistons out the number was on the camshaft side and the hole to the rear. I assume (??) they mean the little hole that goes out the top of the connecting rod to crankshaft bearing. Is the oil hole toward the rear OK? I'd guess it lubes the cylinder wall and really don't matter which way it squirts - it would hit the cylinder the same.

Here is what my shop book says: Install pistons and connecting rods so that notch in piston crown faces forward. The oil squirt hole can face to the front or the rear. Lube and install. Torque to 35-40 ft-lbs. Install lock nuts. Torque to 4-5 ft-lbs. Good Luck.

THANK YOU.. OK, I stuck them in with the oil hole to the rear like they came out. I was using the operator's manual and it is different. I also have a service manual that don't even talk about the engine. I have the rods and mains in now, but I have to stop and go to work - my job gets in the way too much, but I have to pay for new parts. Thanks again. I learn mostly from this board.

Since the pistons are apparently back in already, this is just a rhetorical comment. but while I agree the oil holes can go either way, the rod bearing tabs should only be on one particular side. But on a low RPM engine, it won't matter.

Thank you folks. I agree, and I think the tabs were on the numbered side of the rod which was supposed to go on the camshaft side of the block.

am i ever glad that this happens to guys too! for the longest time i thought that i either couldn't read or didn't understand what i was reading. i've had the same experience that when, with book in hand, i look at freddy's innards, things on or in freddy look different from the way the book says they should - when there are pictures to compare, there also is often a difference between the book and freddy's configuration!
