My 52 8N sat in under a lean-to behind a cousin's barn for 8 1/2 years. Have sucessfully rebuilt the front half, as time permitted, thanks to many tips and advice from a number of you over the past two years. Runs great! I need your help again with a real "stinking" problem - 8 1/2 year old 90 wt oil and its residue (a firm rubbery black layer). Whats a good thorough method to clean it from the rear housing? I've removed the hydraulic pump, cleaned and serviced it but consider it vital to get the gunk out from the gears, axil housings and the pump housing. Ah, ha, did I just solve the problem? Gunk? But seriously, I want to do a good job but yet don't have much time to put into it. What will get the job done? Many thanks! Paul

Oven cleaner is truly a remarkable substance. Let it sit overnight, and all sorts of amazing things start to slide off a baked on gunky tractor.

My 2 cents is to remove as much as you can by hand, mechanically, first. Scrapers, etc. Then finish up with the kerosene. Eric

Diesel fuel can help with this. But whichever way, it's going to be a rotten, nasty, smelly job. Might as well do it right.

Right on with the smell!!..get some throw-away clothes, plenty of hand cleaner, and don't do the cleaning around any part of the house where the wife can get a wiff....the smell lingers a long time, and you'll never hear the end of it. Same is true with cleaning a gas tank that has turned to varnish.

Keeping off the couch...

I cleaned mine a couple years ago with kerosene. Does almost as well as gasoline, but much less fire hazard. You still have to be careful, though.Disconnect the battery, keep all other heat or spark sources away (cigarettes, cigars, torches, arc welders, etc.) Hope this helps. I think it was Llamas or Claus told me something once about the availability of asbestos suits.
