I have'nt run my 49 8n for more than a couple of hours since I had the crank out last spring and had it ground and put in new bearings.
At the time I was doing this I used locktite on the connecting rod nuts as there was no pal nuts available anywhere I asked in my area. My question is this; What does anyone have to say about the use of locktite with no pal nuts? Are they going to loosen off and ruin my newly ground crank?

I found some new ones at a local machine shop here in Pensacola, FL. The guy charged me a couple of bucks for 8 of them. I have quite a few old ones in my tool box that I found after I bought the new ones. I tell you they work quite well. I did a test on a bolt/nut/palnut in a vice and there is no way the nut would back off with out almost breaking the palnut. I was amazed! Anyway I used them just by themselves (no locktite) and have not had a problem yet. Go to www.palnut.com amazing whats on the internet these days. I had a very hard time finding them until I stumbled across the machine shop. Happy 8Ning!

I wouldn't worry about the pal nuts.Nothing uses them nowdays and all goes well.If you just sit down and think about it they were kind of silly anyway. The locktight will hold a lot more than those pal nuts ever did.

I tend to agree that the pal nuts made me nervous too. The Loctite is OK. Alternatively, I went to my local auto parts store and bought crimped rod nuts, like the kind used in racing engines. No problems, and that was 2 years ago.
