8N problems

My 8N has developed a strange symptom recently and replacing plugs points rotor cap condensor and plug wiring doesn't help. It starts easily, (of course it's still warm even in Wyo), and runs smoothly up to about half throttle but if you try to increase engine speed beyond half throttle at either an idle or under load, it begins to miss badly. Cough hiccup snort and backfire. The whole shebang. Any help????? Appreciate any ideas you may have.

Got a timing light? Hook it up and admire the flashes. Rev the engine up and keep on admiring the flashes. If the timing jumping, stuttering, drifting and intermittently missing? If so, now you know it's ignition. If not, look elsewhere. The choke pull is a very good way to quick check carburation.

...and point that timing light at the crank pulley. Usually there's some feature on it you can watch, oil spot, scratch, etc. You should be able to see it advance and retard as the throttle is moved. I would guess your problem is related to ignition timing. Check the basics, points, gaps, and timing. Eric

mine was acting up in the creek today. I've found gas to be the culprit everyonce once and a while. My remedy today and at other times? Backed the adjustment screw out on the carb till it ran smooth.

If pulling out the choke slowly doesn't improve the problem temporarily (denoting a fuel flow problem), I would look to the coil next. If you can get a spark plug tester (clear glass tester) you can watch the sparking as accelerating and can visually see any problems with misfires.

I just had to replace my coil as it was acting just the reverse of yours. Missing like crazy at low speed, high idle fine, load it and it would stumble and miss.

Good luck

Check your point gap and make sure it is not too much. Also check the side movement of the distributor shaft. If it is flopping around it won't run right at higher rpms. You might try runnng less than the recommended clearance. sometimes that will help if the points are bouncing.

While you're checking free play in the distributor shaft, check the centrifugal advance weights and springs under the breaker plate.
