Found an interesting 801 with the select-o-speed that only I like. Now I do understand that the model numbers tell you what it has in the way of live pto and such (attached web page). BUT, I have no idea where that number hides on the tractor! Oh pretty please, wise members, could ya'll tell me where I would find this number so I can tell what this 801 should have?

The site you're referencing answers your questions. There's even a pic showing the model number location and further down a table explaining what the various digits in the model number mean. Just briefly, the number is stamped just above the serial number on a horizontal flat surface just below the battery on the left side of the tractor. Sometimes a battery will split and spill acid on this area obliterating the numbers. Seen this on more than one 801. As I remember, the SOS 801 tractors were either 871 or 881. One has live pto the other doesn't, can't remember which is which, but Dan's site will tell ya. Bye.

All Select-O-Speed tractors had live PTO. The x81's had a 2-speed PTO.

Look over the transmission as carefully as you can before buying. If anything is wrong with that tractor, the tranny will be it.
