Well we all know that the gas tank on a 2N is attached to the hood. I am thinking of starting the tractor with the hood removed and was trying to think of a way of rigging up a small temporary gas tank for this purpose. I have seen this in Robert Pripps' book "How to Restore your Farm Tractor." Just wondering if any one has any suggestons as to what sort of vessel to use, how to hook it up, or had done the same themselves etc.

After rebuilding my 2N I wanted to start her up before reassy of the hood in case I had some problems. I took a standard 1 gal plastic can and connected a fuel line to the tiny "air port" on the back of the can. (you know the little thing you open up so that when you pour gas it doesn't splash all over the place) Then I lay the can on its side (on a chair/bench or whatever) with the large pouring spout up. Gas flows down to the carb and before you shut off the engine you can stand the can up with the fuel line attached and run it dry. No need for a second can or special parts. (This won't work if you want to ride around with the hood off, unless you figure out how to mount it)

I have a 1 quart lawnmower tank with shutoff. I've rigged a 12" steel brake from the tank that will fasten to the elbow on the carb. With a splash of gas, it's self-suporting and can drive the tractor.

I have a Troy-Bilt tiller that I easily removed the gas tank from for the temporary use of an 8N tank. I used a longer piece of tubing, placing the tiller tank securely on a nearby bench top. I might have to check out the lawn mower repair shop idea for discarded parts. That's a good one.

I go to the nearest lawn mower repair shop and they are willing to give me my choice off junkers for little or nothing. Usually I buy some plastic fuel line and a shut off valve to go with it. Pick one with a steel bracket on it so you can bolt or wire it on to the tractor.

Reid, if you do an archives search here, you will find a pretty thorough thread on this topic, giving several options that will solve this one for you.

Hope this helps..... ..... Ed
