I had a used tractor dealer tell me today that if I put an 8 volt battery in my NAA I would have more cranking power and I wouldn't have to change any of the electrical system. He said it wouldn't harm anything. What do you think? Any experience out there with this trick? I've never even heard of an 8 volt battery. I thought I had to use 6 volt or upgrade to 12 volt electrical system.

I've heard that the auto mfgs. are considering going to 24 volts systems for autos and light trucks in the near future. Anyone heard the same? Comments? Hmmm... that should solve all those problems on the N's out there that are hard to start!!!

Not just 24 volt, 42 big powerful high torque A/C running, wheel steering VOLTS. 2002 is the year of the change. The 8 volt battery will serve you well, used one in a Funk V-8 for years and now in a 4 cyl.

So now when I see "24V" on the side of a new car I won't know whether it has lotsa volts or lotsa valves.

Al, 8 volt batteries were used by some American auto manufacturers in the mid '50 when they realized that 6 volts was not enough start those big V8s that were being introduced. I know GM used 8V for a while until they went to 12v.
BTW, my NAA starts good as long as I keep a good 6V battery in it. Starts even better after I had the generator rebuilt a couple years ago and installed a new regulator at the same time. Good luck with 6V. ray

8 volt batteries were common in some jeeps and some marine applications. I think they are more trouble than they are worth. Hard to adjust a generator and regulator to charge them right. My suggestion is one; make sure all the wires are good, a new wiring harness is not that much. two, replace all the battery/starting wires with new ones and make sure they are the thick ones for six volts as 12 volts wires are smaller and don't carry the amps needed to spin the starter at the proper speed. and last, I upgraded my ignition system on my NAA to an electronic one from Genessee Products. They advertise here. It is a little pricey, but it works. my tractor cranks very quickly. I've had my tractor 20 plus years and have never thought about changing it to 12 volts.

AL, If your starting system is in good shape such as, good connections, proper size wire, starter condition and a good solenoid the 6v. should turn the engine fast enough to start. However if the engine or ignition system is in poor condition, but still good enough to operate and use, I would suggest the 12v. conversion. I have used a 8v. prior to converting to 12v., I always had a problem of keeping the battery charged, because the 6v. gen. will not fully charge an 8v. battery. On the other hand a battery charger, the 6v. is not enough and 12v. is too much. So you are right back where you were. There are some that want to keep it original and that is a very valid point if you use it for show or just like original. I personally like the 12v.,it seems to start like a different tractor, And there is nothing worse than being all geared up to do something and all you get from your tractor is a grunt. Just my opinion.....Jay
