I know that I have read some things here in the past about axle seals, but I can't seem to find the info. My 8N has leak oil from both axles onto the brakes. I am getting ready to tear it apart and fix it, but I am looking for advice on how to do it right and not have it happen again for awhile.

Thanks.

I did mine a couple years back, used the mindset that I never wanted to do this again. I replaced the hubs, seals, axles, and bearings. Here's why. If the hub is worn on either the sealing surface or in the splines(from being loose),the seal won't make positive contact all the way around. The axles may have worn splines that the hub mounts to, this could ruin new hubs. New axles deserve new bearing pressed on, besides worn bearing can cause play(up-down,side to side)that can cause the seal to not have full contact. It may seem like alot but the old girl will appreciate the care you have given her. I think it cost about $600 to complete the project

I just read a how-to on seals recently on smiths web site. Think it was in the faq part.

Roy, there is a small modicum of hope in your situation. The New Holland(Ford)Dealer should carry some seals called SureSeals that were designed to fit the 9N,2N,& 8N Models that had only one axle seal originally. With these, you don't have to destroy the bearing retainer just to replace the axle seals.

Leaking rear seals on 8n tractors is acommon problem especially with the olde ones .the older 8ns didnt have a inner seal in the housing. the later ones did and that helped the problem. If yours has the inner seal be sure to replace it as well as the outer one.If it doesn't you cant put one in there because it isn't machined for it. check the hubs ,if they are worn or loose on the axle replace them too.Put heavy wheel bearing grease on the wheel bearings that will help keep the oil back. Sometimes no matter what you do they will eventually leak. Good luck ED
