I have a 48 8n front mount distributer. At end of season last year in NY I developed bad leaks in radiator. Found out that it cant be fixed and needs to be replaced. I have ordered parts and ready to replace. My question is while I have it apart should I check other things. When stating last year I would get white smoke not steam for short time (1 to 2 min ) then would clear up. Also a little oily sludge at top of radiator but no water in oil. Pulled plugs and all look good except for one that is very black. Should I be thinking new head gasket?? . Cannot find any sign of leak at bolts. My better judgement tells me to replace radiator put back together and then recheck for problems seeing I don"t think head has ever been off? While I replace radiator I am going to replace belt as that looks original too. Also is there any way to check thermostat to see if that is working properly? Tractor ran well last year except for radiator leaks which is also the orginal but was running pretty hot??I put in new thermostat 10 years ago because when I bought it there was not one. Any advise would be great

Patrick,

You might as well inspect the king pin and king pin bushing if you're at this stage. Also, be sure to check the condition of the water pump. Any give = time for a rebuild.

There's something there that needs attention. I vote for head gasket.

Sounds like a small head gasket leak, but you will get other and better replies from those with much more experience than me. Replacing the head gasket on these tractors is pretty simple..., look under the archives for some of Hobo's comments. Just get the best quality material. You'll have the hood off for the radiator replacement, so work will go fast. After you do it, remember to retorque the bolts/nuts after a couple of uses that get the engine to peak operating temperature, and I always retorque when the engine is cold.

Thanks for replying. I have never replaced a head gasket before... tips on doing it would be great. From what I can tell there are 18 bolts that need to be removed to take head off??

Patrick..... .tips? I always "Q-tip" the corner bolt holes 'cuz somehow water always spills when you remove the head. You can CRACK the corner OFF iff'n you don't clean/dry the corners. I spray BOTH sides of the gasket with aluminum paint and install WET. Torque the studnuts/headbolts in circular pattern starting from center of block. The FO-4 has the recommended pattern. I re-torque after about 30-min of warm-up. I've never had headbolts leak but don't use RTV to puckey yer boltholes, use teflon tape. ..... ..leakless Dell
