The ol 9n was running then just kinda quit. Thought I was out of gas, add some still wouldn't start. Replaced points condensor cap checked and has good spark and timing is correct. Rebuilt carborator, still wont start. Tried spraying ether (starting fluid) still wont even run a short while. engine spins freely, no knocking sounds. The only thing I havent done (will do tomorrow) is check compression. pistons, sleeves were installed about 10 years ago. Maybe intake manifold gasket?? Loosing hope thought I could fix this little rascal in my sleep. Maybe valve problems?? Something I'm overlooking? Now dark as hell when I get home and its in the drainage ditch with rain expected Sunday. Help is appreciated.

You've verified spark at the plug, by pulling the plug out and grounding it while cranking? Or did you just pull the coil wire and ground it?

Won't start on ether? Did you spray it in the air cleaner or did you pull the hose and pipe and spray it in the carb throat? Have you cleaned the air cleaner lately by removing the filter medium and washing it in kerosene or gas?

I'd pull the plugs and do a quickie compression test to see if perhaps the timing gear and cam were turning(valves opening and closing). Also check the key switch and check voltage to and from coil with points opened and closed.

thanks, I pulled the plug and grounded it has spark. I can feel the air compressing with the plug pulled. I sprayed starting fluid into the carb with the air cleaner removed. dang thing didn't pop. must be a stuck valve sucking air?? intake manafold gasket?? Compression check should give me some answers. any help appreciated. These are pretty simple engines, kinda panicking with the rain coming and all. guess I'll get the neighbor to pull me out and get it to safe ground then proceed.

CG, how good is the spark at the spark plug? Is it a bright bluish-white or is it a reddish dim spark? My neighbor's 9N quit on him in the middle of pulling a stump. His spark was weak and it turned out that his coil went bad all at once. If you are getting gas, and the engine is not hitting, good chance you have ignition or timing problems. On these old tractors, a lot of ignition symptoms are disguised as other problems.
