As a relatively recent 8N owner I'm still trying to learn the machine and catch up on long neglected repairs. My '50 8N steers very hard. Now I understand there isn't power steering on a 50 year old tractor but the steering seems unreasonably hard. I noticed a recent posting, Zerk, Zerk by Sam (MO), where he mentions a 1/8" zerk that's on the top of the steering shaft. I don't find anything like that on mine. Where should this zerk be??? between the steering wheel and dash or between dash and steering gear box? I need some help on this cause if there is supposed to be a zerk there and it hasn't been greased in 101 yrs that might explain the hard steering. I hope one of you veterans out there can help me out. Thanks in advance

Your tractor should have the tapered gears. If it turns smoothly lock-to-lock with the wheels off the ground and makes no popping or grinding noises, you might get by with a good lube job on it. Could be the bearings are frozen up, though. Adjust the sector screws by backing them all the way out nad then adjust them incrementally while turning the steering wheel and see if there is an optimum setting where free play is diminished and steering action is still easy. I'd really feel better about going inside and examining the the recirculating ball assembly and bearings. There is an oil fill hole located in the end of the bolt hole where the battery box bolt fits into the steering box on the right side. It's perpendicular to the bolt shaft at the very end of the hole.

Take the nut off the the steering wheel, fill the hollow tube with gear oil. It helped mine a bunch.

I may be wrong but I think on an 8N that there is a plug in the steering gear box where you can fill it with greese or gear oil. I know there is on a 600/800 and there is none on a 9N but I think there is on an 8N.

That's cause thar taint none. What that fellow had may have been something modified. If you grease the upper bearing, it will stay that way for life...(most of the time, I guess it depends on whose life we are talking about.) You need to determine why it is steering hard. Lift your front end up (Put it on jack stands or other suitable devices) and try the steering. Is it still hard to turn the wheel? If not the problem could be in the steering geometry, specifically the steering axis inclination and camber... Otherwise it could be overly tight sector to ballnut assembly..etc
Happy Motoring

Claus---Danke Shoen (Sp?) Will follow your advice. The steering is nice and loose when wheels are off the ground so will go from there.

Bitte sehr... (G)
Well, then the problem is obviously in the steering box... Is your steering of the later type i.e. adjustment screws for the tapered sector gears. It could be that someone adjusted them too tight. Do you have a lot of play in the steering wheel? Do the sector shafts move sideways indicating worn bushings? Happy motorig
