If you have A side mount distributor 8N and only 2 leads on checker I would try, if they are colored, red lead to distributor side of spark coil, black lead to the + side of coil asuming your electrics are the standard, that is positive ground. This is only my thought maybe wait for other responses..good luck

my tach has three leads, and is also a dwell meter
hook up went: red to positive at battery
black to neg at battery
green to wire from coil to points
I have to admit I was a little perplexed by positive grounding, and gravity works real good when you drop the wrench and float bowl plug in the dark.

I forgot to tell you all; I have a front mount distributor..... I tried putting a lead on the only external post on the coil and the other lead from the meter to ground no luck..... ..... your continued help in this matter is appreciated.

A tach works by sensing the closing of the points by watching the input wire change from battery voltage to ground and back. The terminal on top of the coil will only drop a few volts down from the battery when the points close. This is not enough change to run a standard tach.

The only solution I've heard so far is to modify the distributor and coil by connecting a small wire to the points and routing it to the outside. I have not done this myself but it should work.
