I guess I should just purchase a book, but here's a stupid question that comes up from reading through a few of these messages. Does the 8N have a positive ground wiring system? If so, what could I have damaged by reversing polarity? Also, can you "jump" this 6-volt system with a 12-volt charge without doing damage?

I'm not the electrical expert, but I can answer a couple of your questions:
Yes it was originally a positive ground 6 volt system. What yours is now after 50 years of modifications is anyone's guess. I'll pass on the question of what happens by changing polarity.
As for jumping a 6V tractor with a 12 volt source: yes it can be done, if you do it right. First make sure the trans is in neutral as this method bypasses the safety switch and could cause the tractor to lurch forward if it's in gear. Next ground one terminal from the 12 v source to the frame of the tractor. Then touch the other terminal to the terminal on the starter where the battery cable attaches. The safer method would be to disconnect the cable from the battery first. The starter does not care about polarity so it doesn't matter which 12v source cable you put where. This will cause the starter to spin. Make sure the tractor ignition is on or it will spin but not start.

Well, this could be interpreted incorrectly, I know what you mean, but others may not. The point of where the hot leads (Of the donor battery) connects to is the starter side of the starter relay and not where the battery cable connects to. If one disconnects the vehicle battery, then there will be no juice for the ignition system. This is dangerous however, one must ensure that there is no accidental connection to the vehicle battery. This could lead to unpleasant consequences.
