Recently purchased replacement ammeter for 9N. The old one on tractor had two posts, with a small clip at the bottom, with the wire only running through the clip. The new one has no clip, but the two posts are marked + and -. How do I hook up the new one? Also, the tractor is still 6V, with positive ground. This one's got me puzzled. I know it's the correct replacement part, as it's mfg'd for 1939-1958 9N, 2N and 8N.
HELP??

What you will have to do is cut the wire into where it used to go through the loop and put ends on the wire to connect to the terminals on the ammeter. If you guess it right the meter will read charge to the right. If you guess the hookup wrong it will read charge to the left and if you want to correct it you just switch the leads on the ammeter.

The needle of the ammeter will ALWAYS point in the direction of flow of electrons.
Therefore, if the right side of the guage says charge, then the left wire will be the one from the generator.

I have changed tractors over from the positive ground 6V system to 12V negative system and every time I did this I had to reverse the wiring on the ammeter in order for it to read charge to the right side of the ammeter. So what gives?

To ZANE: thanks for the info. I hooked it up today and everything works fine. One more question, what should the optimal amperage reading be if everything is at peak condition?
I am getting between 10 and 12 amps reading on the new meter.
