I need to charge the oil in my 8N. What kind do you need to use and how much do they hold. I don't think they had detergent type oil back then, so do I use non detergent or is detergent oil ok?

thanks again

Well I'm getting pretty old and have seen a million opinions on this. Been working on engnes since late 50's and have been a lot of new types of oil come out. Most all are good/very good but the most oil related failures is due to the lack of oil rather than the type of oil. I use the same in all my vehicles to make life easier.

Mobil 1 is a very good lubricating oil and I use it in my Taurus & F-150. It has excellent detergent action that could cause you problems.

If your tractor has always used non-detergent, there is the good possibility that the straight Mobil 1 could dislodge bits of crud while dissolving sludge in the engine. These bits of crud could lodge in some of the oil passageways.

When I bought my '54 NAA in March of 1999, I changed the oil immediately and added 5 Qts. of a good detergent oil and 1 Qt. of Mobil 1. I plan to clean my engine over a several oil changes. Next year, I plan to add 4 Qts. of detergent oil and 2 Qts. of Mobil 1 at each oil change.

Just thought I would add my $.02. If your engine has not been rebuilt recently (last 20 years) and it has had non-detergent oil used in it, I would stick with the non-detergent. You can get non-detergent oil with a good rating. If your engine has been rebuilt recently it more than likly has used detergent oil. Just remember that when these engines were built the oil spec's were around "SA". Todays oil is "SF" or better. I don't like to spend $4.00/qt for oil, so I don't use synthetic. There is no real reason for it. If you change your oil and filter every 50 hrs, the I&T manual recomends that for winter and 100 for summer, you should have no problems. In the winter (under 30 deg.) here in WI I use straight 10 weight, in the summer I use straight 30 weight, not a multi grade. It holds 6 quarts of oil with a filter change. Also, the most important accesory you need for your tractor is a good manual.

I use MOBILE 1 10/30, it is much better than any thing out 50 years ago. Or today for that matter It also flows better at low temps (handy here in Alaska!) and sticks to parts when the tractor sits for long period of time. Actually any high quality oil is OK. MOBILE 1 is just my opinion as "best".

Not to be blunt or anything, but if you use non-detergent oil, you're an idiot. Modern detergent oils are >way< better than anything ol' Henry could even DREAM of in the forties. I'd recommend using Mobil 1 synthetic oil if your tractor doesn't burn much oil, otherwise use one of the major brand names. (I like Shell products)
As to weight, a lot depends on the condition of your engine and the climate where you are. You should use the thinnest oil that will hold sufficient oil pressure. The original owner's manual specifies 27 psi. at 1500 rpm. with the engine at normal operating temperature. I've heard on this board of tractors in real good condition holding 30-40 psi. with Mobil 1 0W-30, and I'm sure there are some out there that won't hold 10 psi. with 50wt. racing oil. Just depends...

yea man. non detergent oils suck. flat out they ain't no good, don't use them. Who cares if oil is $1.00 or $4.00. MOBILE 1 will not break down in your engine period. As a matter of fact several new cars and high performance trucks mandate MOBILE 1 or the engine warranty is void!! Why, you may ask? BECAUSE MOBILE 1 IS A SUPERIOR lube. Your tractor will probably never wear out using it.
