Don't remember seeing this addressed before, if I missed it sorry. My alt(Delco)quit charging. Can the regulator or whatever does the charging be replaced in the home shop, and if so what is the part? I understand it is inside the alt and would need to be taken apart to be replaced. Thanks in advanced.

In back of the altinator, is a small hole that you can stick a small screwdrive in and short out the tab on the voltage regulator. If it now charges, the VR may be bad.. As Les said, "to pin the brushes" you would use tooth picks...
The diode trio can be checked with an ohm meter and you would check each part of the diode (3) like a regular diode.

I am quite sure that you will find SIX DIODES in the full-wave bridge in a Generous-Motorous alternator.

So you will, but that was not the question. As you know, the standard Delco contain a grand total of 9 diodes, not including various and sundry control diodes inside the regulator package.

Claus was referring to checking the three diodes of the regulator control trio - not the six-diode bridge of the output section.

The regulator override hole location is a sort of D shape - the probe or wire inserted in there to activate this function will go in about 2 inches before it makes contact.

It can be replaced at home. The part is the voltage regulator and/or diode trio. Take the alt. to a parts store and have them test it first. The brushes have to be pinned into the holders during reassembly.
