Hi Guys.Well, for those of you who have done major overhauls or other such projacts lately, this will seem like small potatoes. But, I'm wiggly as a puppy after the FINAL success of my alternator/wiring harness replacement! The old alternator was tired, had a jimmied-up cob-job set of brackets which held it at an improper angle, and was generally shot. It took about four days to complete the whole project (which also included a new shop-made battery holder), but last night after dark by the light of a halogen work light, I hooked up a temporary gas tank (the hood's still suspended several feet above the tractor on the winch frame), and hit the starter. She fired up immediately, and my new voltage meter (sorry, guys, I like it a LOT better than an ammeter!) showed 15 volts. The new oil pressure gauge started out a 60 p.s.i., but soon dropped to just under 40 (maybe I won't have to do a major overhaul after all!). No smoke from the harness, and even the light in the volt meter worked! Make sure, all those of you who switch from 6 to 12 volts using a 10SI GM alternator, that you have the correct B-width pulley before you start! Locating a used one would probably not be so hard if it was a weekday, but I found myself without one on a Saturday afternoon after I broke the one that had been on my old alternator getting it off. I finally found a double sheave from another alternator, which turned out to be exactly what I needed--no shimming of the mounting bracket to achieve alignment! Sorry to go on and on, but first-time successes on tractor repairs seem so rare for me..... Ron
