Bad Coil Connections???

I am a new 8N owner. The problem I have is the
spark comes and goes. By grabbing the coil and
twisting it back and forth, I get the machine to
start and run. I am wondering if the problem
is internal to the coil (requiring replacement)
or is it the connections between the coil and
distributor/rotor cap. I noticed that these two
connections are pretty low tech (semi-spring for
low voltage and a tab for the high voltage).
I have replaced all other components from the
plugs to the points including rotor and rotor cap.
Any thoughts or recommendations out there?

Rich

I would remove the distributor and coil and look at it with the distributor cap removed. You can then see if the problem is with the spring connection to the points. There should be a brass screw with a countersink in the distributor. The spring from the coil should make good contact with the brass screw...If not, stretch it a little. You could also bend the tab going to the distributor cap to ensure a good connection. If you have an ohm meter, then connect one side to the terminal on top of the coil and the other lead to ground. Turn the distributor and you should see from short (Low impedance primary about 1 ohm) to open as the points close and open.
Hope this helps.
Happy Motoring
