The 8N set for about 15 years and I tried to turn it over with the starter but it didn't work. Nolan got all over my case for not taking the head off and going about this resurrection in a slow manor. Well I'm glad I took his advice, thanks. I went ahead and took the valve covers and head off. The valves and lifters look good with no rust but ash on top. Sort of black like unburned carbon on the exhaust and tan color on the intake. The pistons had a lot of ash on top of them the 2 & 3 looked like tan color and the 1& 4 looked both tan and black ash. The motor turned over easy by hand, wasn't stuck. Very little rust anywhere. The pistons look tight and cylinder walls look good to me, I think this one has the steel sleeves because of the star before and after the number.

I sure appreciate the discussion group and advice. The only thing I found and have a question about is the fact that it appears the last overhaul they used two head gaskets. Both metal, one was copper both sides with what appears to be asbestos between them and the other was silver metal both sides with asbestos between them. That don't look good because that may mean the head was wrapped or maybe they milled to much off and needed clearance. Has anyone else run into the two head gaskets. What to do next?

The two head gaskets probably indicate the head was milled too thin and the pistons or valves were striking the combustion chamber surfaces. I'd probably be inclined to replace the head with a new one. A new head may be slightly warped too, so it may be a good idea to have it checked by a machine shop.
