The carb on my 8N looks very different from the one in
the I&T shop manual and I wonder if it is the econmizer they talk about. It Has an adjusment screw at the bootom of the bowl and one above both on the front side. Does anyone Know what the inintial settings for these jets should be and then how to further adjust. The tractor seems to run extremely rich when it is warn to the point that it misses and back fires.

Tks

If it is backfireing it is not too rich. May be too lean and have this symptom but not too rich.
By the way when in reciprocating aircraft engine school back in the early 50s they taught us that backfire was out the intake and that afterfire was out the exhaust. I still think that way so which is it?
Either way it won't be from being too rich.
The screw that is in the bottom of the carburetor is probably going to be the high speed mixture. With the throttle at full start turning the needle in clockwise till the engine begins to sputter and possibly afterfire. Then turn the needle out counter clockwise until the engine smooths out and then about another one quarter turn out.
The other needle is the idle mixture and you can play with it at idle and try to find the place where the engine has the most and smoothest rpms and then set the rpms with the engine speed screw on the throttle of the carburetor. The idle mixture will have little or no effect on the high speed mixture adjustment.
