Found the problem

I posted a couple of messages in the last two weeks about trying to find the problem with my '52 8N, which was "lunging" under load with a newly rebuilt engine and carburetor.

I found it - it's the carburetor. Fortunately, I have two identical tractors, and today when I switched the old un-rebuilt carburetor to the tractor I'm working on, it runs fine.

The carburetor will be going back for re-re-building! Funny thing, I can't tell what is wrong with it. They replaced everything on it, I blew it out with air, all the passages are open and the float adjustment is OK. The rebuilder had run the engine on the stand with this carburetor, but it ran fine and he had no way of telling it would starve out only "under load".

Anyway, thanks to all those here who helped with ideas on this - and if you ever have a similar problem, it might be the carb.

My newly rebuilt engine with new Zenith carb did pretty much the same. I corrected it by opening the high speed needle valve about 1/2 turn. I had to adjust it a few times while plowing with a turning plow to get it right. I could not simply rev the engine and adjust to make it take the governors under load. Runs fine now.

I have a similar problem but it's not too bad. Requires about 1/2" of choke to remedy. I replaced my manifold/gasket and rebuilt my carb. Wish you knew exactly what it was for our sake. I suspect my problem may be the seals around the choke and/or throttle shaft. Just haven't gotten to it yet. Good info from ya tho. Thanks
