I have an 8N with a front loader that has a hydr pump driven off the crank shaft in front. Usually the pump is nice and quiet but sometimes it seems that it is picking up foam or air somehow and really raises a ruckus. Is there an additive to put in the hydr fluid to stop foaming. My idea is if I know foaming isn't a problem I can start looking for an air leak on the low pressure side. Any suggestions from you guys with experience in this area??? TNX in advance.

I would look first for a restricted oil filter. If it doesn't have a filter then I would look for a restriction in the intake hose to the pump from the reservoir. Some times these intake hoses can collapse inside and cause a restriction of the flow of the oil to the pump. Usually if it is an air leak it will drip when not in operation.
Also be sure that you have enough oil in the reservoir to supply all the cylinders when fully extended and still have some oil in reserve.

I forgot to mention in the original post that when the pump gets real noisy, the speed of moving the hoist or bucket drops to about 10% of normal.
Also, when it gets noisy if I extend all three pistons all the way out of the cylinders and then retract them all the way back into the cylinders several times the noise usually goes away and the speed of motion returns to normal.
Maybe this will help diagnose the problem, TNX again
