Hello, I have a good starting ok running 9n. The big problem is too much oil is getting past the rings. I pulled the head and found three cylinders soaked with oil(and one good one). I then pulled #1 piston and found a 4 ring piston with three rings(missing the bottom oil ring). The pistons are standard and in good shape. The .090 sleeves check out ok but the ring gap was way off. Is the missing bottom ring a major factor here? I know that most people would go with a three ring piston but would like to stick to 4 rings for economics. Thanks in advance for any advice.

What Zane said, plus YES, the bottom ring is a factor. The purpose of the upper rings is to hold the compression within the cylinder. The sole purpose of the lower ring is to wipe oil from the sleeves to prevent burning.

Yes, put a new set of 3 rings in. I prefer the old iron rings over the new harder, long lasting rings. Hard rings will outlast the sleeves and pistons and take forever to break in.

The 4 ring piston has been deemed obsolete and poorly engineered for years. You can use the 4 ring piston with only 3 rings. It carrys the same rings as the 3 ring piston and the extra ring land will have absolutely no effect on the effecience of the rings or the piston. That 4 ring piston was just one more of Fords better ideas that didn't pan out in actual operation.
If the pistons are in good condition and within tolerance I would use them again if you want to save a little money. If you have the money to spare replace them with the 3 ring piston but you will get the same results with the 4 ring pistons if they are OK>
