I have been driving by a for-sale 601 for a few days. From the road, it looks like it should be in a factory showroom, absolutely perfect and brand-new.

Today I stopped and looked at it, and found it is a 20-footer. That is, it looks a lot better from 20 feet away. Poor rubber, holes rusted through fenders, dangling wires, oil leaks, broken gauges - all held together by a brand-new spray can paint job. Too bad. I didn't talk to anyone, but the sign said it is a 1962 model and the price is $4500.

For that, I'm not interested - my 8N's are in a lot better shape. Still, for future reference, the 601 Workmaster model does look like a neat little tractor. I don't think it's any bigger than an 8N. Has anyone here had a 601 Workmaster, and what's the scoop on them?

Oh, too bad that 601 isn't better. These really are much better tractors than 8Ns, though maybe not as much sentiment. 601s have about 10 more pto hp., live hydraulics (pto doesn't need to be in gear) may have 2-stage clutch (continuou running pto.) and a longer-lived engine than an 8N by far. You might want to hear it run and ask if there is not some implements. With a strong engine and several implements...might be worth ?????

yep.... i got one.

actually do not have an n, just prefer this board to some others. i've found many similarities to the n series, especially the 8n's.

jerry's correct in his info and linked you to a good page.

my tractor is a 641, in basic form. no power steering, no live pto. but a very strong tractor. rear tires are filled and it can pull quite a bit. the live hydraulics make it nice for working. it has a dearborn snowplow on the front, hydraulically operated from a block under the front center of the seat, so it has both up and down hydraulics. it's in need of some work as well. some previous owner (who should be never be allowed to use anything above a tricycle) bondoed the holes in the fenders, but didn't sand or smooth them.... just globs. they didn't bother to do anything to the dents in the fenders when they did the bodywork either. they also brush painted the front sheetmetal, including the dents in it. nice.

but the gauges do work, and the rubber is fair. starting to crack on the rear tires... gues i'll be breaking down and buying some fresh next summer. it does have some small oil leaks and also needs the hyd lines replaced for the front blade, as they are starting to leak as well.

however.... it's a 59 i think, and i didn't give near 4500 for it.

anyways, i love it and hopefully will be able to start straightening it out next fall. i'm working it pretty regular now for grading, log skidding, and mowing. it's probably not as bad as i make it sound, but i do want to get it into better shape.

post back or email me if you have some specific questions, and i'll try to impart what little wisdom i have.

601 gas model has a 134 cu in overhead valve engine. Overall a little bigger than an N with more hp. Check the link below for more info and comparison data.
