A guy that I work with has a 8-n and a 9-n that does not run good. the 8-n has no comprashon so I say that it needs reringed. the 9-n is blowing oil into the water. so hopefuly all it needs is a head gasket and the runing boards are gone off of it. Both have good paint on them.
He wants to trade me both of them for a atv that i have .I have about 1200$ in the atv . would this be a good trade. I dont no that much about fords, I mostly have a-c on the farm.
So what do you thank.

Too many variables left to make accurate judegment. One can sink a lot of money into a non-functioning hydraulic system, or a trany that is amiss, Also you mention nothing of the electrical system, these parts can also affect "value." The steering assembly can also get REAL spendy to fix. Even if everything else is in great shape you could (worse case scenario) sink a grand into each engine or more if you can't do the work yourself. I also agree with BG....this sounds as if someone is "trolling" and I'm not to interested in the bait-----although I did respond didn't I????? 8^) David

the boy that owns them said that everthing worked on them when he parked them. the story on then is this. this guy was having a house bult and he bought the 8-n to pull a bush hog a round with and disk up his yard to put grass into.he said that the 8n got to the point that it didnt have enough to pull the bush hog. so he did not have time to fix it and didnt know how. so he went out and got the 9n used it for awhile and it started to get oil into the water.so he parked it and went out and bought him a new 20hp diesal john deer.yes i can do my own work ,

In my opinion, I would say trade, your atv is going to depreciate and lose all it's value. Both tractors even though not prefect, can be repaired and will be worth more every year. Now don't forget that's my opinion, but it depends on what is best for you, not every-one has the same interests.
Your decision will be the best. Good luck.

On the low compression problem, retest with about a teaspoon of crankcase oil poured into each plug hole. If compression increases, then it's rings. If it does not, then it's valves.

Oil in the water? If it truly is liquid engine oil, in little puddles on the surface, it's a cracked block. If, on the other hand, it's black, oily carbonacaeous junk, as much solid as liquid, it's a weak head gasket, which you can replace in an hour for a total cost of about $20.

I'd pass on that deal unless and until I knew more about what was wrong with both.

llater,

I agree with llamas but for a different reason. I think that you could probably fix the tractors and get good value in the trade but right now they are both useless! One bad running tractor is worse than two.... and they both take up space in the barn! I assume the ATV works! on the flip side you can get $2000 out of the pair even in current shape.
