A friend of mine just bought a Ford tracor of unknown model or series . It has a backhoe and a frontend loader . The tractor looks like it could be an 800 series or a Jubilee . I have looked for the serial numbers on the engines left side ( machined surface ), but none are visible .The numbers found on the flywheel housing are cast 8NC . Doesn't look like any 8N I've ever seen . I believe it has a Select-O-matic tranny too .We need to know what this is to get a service manual for it . We also can't find a lever to engage the PTO . It isn't like my 8N .

Look on the top of the transmission housing on the left side just behind the starter, on a flat spot. Your S/N should be there.

M Farmer..... .you write..... ."The tractor would run but coughed if I raised the throttle quickly and lacked full power when I mowed with it"..... .it aint'chur coil and most likely aint'chur carb..... ..its yer centrifugal advance.

Many inexperienced shadetree mechanics mistakenly use the slightly longer #8-32x1/4" condenser screw (not shown) 'stedda' the correct SHORT #8-32x3/16 points hold-screws (shown) The slightly longer condenser screw catches the leaf spring of the centrifugal advance weight under the points plate. And while you need retarded spark to start, you NEED SPARK ADVANCE for power. Your complaint, I believe?

The SHORT points screws (p/n: 355047-S8) also gitt INVISIBLE wear and allow the points to slip closed and cause weak sparkies. $0.50c, cheap. Gitt'em at yer local Ford AUTOMOBILE parts counter with that part number, believe it or not. Ny 1972 Ford 390-V8 distributor used them. ..... ..Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

HCooke said: (quoted from post at 20:26:15 07/23/08) Mowed some paths in my tall grass prairie today.

Nothing like a little seat time. I mowed some thistles in the spring that were that tall...Grass aint growing much but the camp ground called me in for the second cut last week. Some places I had a hard time seeing where I made the last cut. He had a big crowd coming for the weekend and they were there on saturday when I finished up. I got the camping area during the week so I was clear of them for the rest of it. Chopped up more rock then grass  Ill give him credit for keeping the place up. Before I asked him all they had was a riding mower and they went through some belts... The Mermaids Cove 14 acres creek along one meadow and the lake on the other meadow...10 is mowable..
