I don't think that is a rusty TV antenna sticking up on the left side of that tractor.

SG, HOw can you gut the square can coil? I didnt see any screws or any way to open the can up, it looked like a sealed unit. Right now I am using the new 12v square can coil I got with my conversion kit. I am checking spark by removing the spark plug from the hole and laying it and grounding the plug on the head. There is lots of blue snot (as dell refers) at the end of the plug, especially after I replaced the points.

Hammer..... .naw, you ain't mucked-up in the head.

The 3-volt reading is for the 6-volt squarecan ignition coil ONLY.

About 9-11 volts is for the NEW 12-volt squarecan ignition coil with "infamous ballast resistor".

Sorry for confuzzion. Ya nebber-noe what squarecan ignition coil is being used.

I personally think the NEW MODERN 12-volt squarecan ignition coil ...AND... the "infamous ballast resistor" together is the way to go on 12-volt conversions to the frontmount engine.

When the 12-volt squarecan coil first appeared some 10-15yrs ago, they were burning out, right and left 'cuz they were designed for 12-volts and 12-volt alternators put out 14.7-volts and vola' melted coil tars and quit running ..... ..Dell

JT..... are we going to haffta play "20-questions"?

We need to know whether yer tractor front wheel is the 5-bolt wide-hub of the 9N/2N's ...or... the 6-bolt narrow-hub of the 8N? They BOTH came from the factory with 4-19 tires, just different rims.

Many 8N's have the 6-bolt 5.50x16" rim. 16" rims are NOT available for the 5-bolt WIDE-HUB 9N/2N's, sorry ..... .Dell

Re: Hydraulic lift top cover in reply to matt_791, 07-22-2008 18:56:04
So I cleaned the cover out today, found the cam pin was brazed at some point.. very roughly too.. There seems to be a lot of side to side play between the position control spring arm and the hy-trol shaft, which is causing the cam pin to not run on the cam. Also my control rod is bent, straighten that tomorrow. Have to cut and straighten and weld the hy-trol lever too, as someone modified that too... So as far as I can gather from lack of response from before, the play in the shaft(s) and arms is acceptable?

Dunk, thanks for the link to Gutting a can coil. At least now I know what the heck was there when I bought the tractor, everybody I talked to thought I was crazy when I said my tractor had 2 coils on it. It seems like buying a new square can 12v coil for $35 is much easier than doing all that gutting and work on the old coil. I probably could have fixed the problem by trying to extend the pigtail spring rather than going overboard and replacing everything. I was also having a problem with my battery not charging too so I figured the new alternator wouldnt hurt either. Oh well the parts are cheap and my labor is free. Now I just have to get it running again.

Re: 9N steering lube in reply to Dwayne Bailey, 07-24-2008 07:20:01
Hi Dwayne..... ...welcome to this great N-Board.

Would you believe yer 9N's steering gears are lubed by an oil slinger from yer tranny gears?

There is a "hole" in the top of the tranny cover which is also the steering gear box bottom, and vola' yer steering gears are always lubed every time you puttter in gear. Just check yer 5-gals of hydro-tranny oil, thats all it takes. What a scheme, ea?.

Tip: don't OVERFILL yer hydro-tranny oil 'cuz it will leak out yer tranny front seal and dribble out yer cotter-keyed drain holes. OVERFILL will also splash out yer rear axle trumpet mouths and greese yer brakes. NOT GOOD

Tranny oil fill is best checked by pulling the bottom 6-o'clock bolt of the round dipstick plate behind yer right heel and letter drain down the side of the tranny overnite. This is plenty of hydro-tranny oil to operate on. Mark yer tranny dipstick with a file for this best level as set by the drain technique ..... Dell
