just bent my drawbar TRYING to pull up an azalea bush. my wife was not impresed with my new purchase here as she watched me with a tractor and 1/2" boomer chain attempt to uproot this bush made up of 10-12 stems no more than 1/2" thick each. Drawbar bent, tires dug in well, jammed my knee 3 times into the dash when trying Jerking technique, also tried removing all slack and dropping in 2nd gear to torque it out, no avail. help please, only other idea is to sneak out tonight and chopp through a few roots while she sleeps and attempt to pull out tomorrow after telling her i added STP or something.
me and embarassed 8N await reply

Take smaller bites. Wrap the chain around only a few of those stems, and pull them loose. You don't need to travel with them, just tear them loose. Back up, and tear a few more out. When you have it all lose, wrap it completely and then drag it off as a whole.

In one weekend I managed to clear about 400' of creek from the hold of the roses that had completely overgrown them this way.

Try as I might I couldn't pull a small stump out of the ground. I had plenty of power but kept losing traction. Finally I backed right up to it and chained it so that I could just lift it right up with the lift arms. First time I tried it the front end came up so I put the front mount plow on for counter weight. Pulled the stump up like a carrot! This wouldn't work with a big stump or heavy rock but it works good with the small ones.

Keep in mind that azaleas have a shallow root system, about 6-8". fwiw, ray

Buy some implements, a brush hog, a back hoe , a dirt scoop and get a front end loader for the N also. Even if none of these worked , the WIFE wouldn't dare point out short comings cause you could say "I guess I need more implements" It works for me...

Know the feeling. I had a lot of trouble with some "tough petunias" once.

":o)

My drawbar was bent when I bought the tractor, and the friendly folks down at the local shop put it into a Piranha 70 ton "jaws-of-death" snipper and straightened it out in a flash.

Don't know what bent it for the previous owner.

AS NOTED THE SECRET IS LEVERAGE. USE THE RIM, OR BEAM. TRYING TO PULL THE SMALLEST STUMP AT THE BOTTOM OF THE TRUNK CAN BE JUST ABOUT IMPOSSIBLE. TAKE THAT SAME STUMP AND TIE UP ON IT ABOUT 3 FT AND ZIPPO IT IS OUT.

I've been successful pulling those things with a pickup truck and a snatch strap. The strap acts kind of like a big rubber band and snatches the roots out. Hook one end aroun the bush and the other on the hitch. Then with slack in the strap drive off. I don't think I would try his on an 8N though, just in case the strap broke or comes loose, There's no cab to protect you. Good luck to you.

Before snatch straps became common, I just hooked two chains to an old tire. The tire acted as a heckuva shock and energy absorber. It even allowed a VW bug to pull my old pickup outta the snow bank once.

Now, though, I just hitch my my Dodge V-10, keep it at idle, and put it in gear.

I once saw a guy in a four wheel drive pick up use the "strap" method of pulling a car from a ditch. Well, he "snatched" it out ok. But he forgot to let someone drive the car and operate the brakes. The car flew across two lanes of traffic and went in another ditch twice as deep and hit a culvert. I'm sorry but I had to pull over to laugh.

I bet that was a sight to see. No one ever said you had to be a rocket scientist to operate one. :o)

If you have or can get an old tire rim without the tire and place it next to the bush and run your chain from the bush and up over the rim and then to your tractor, you shouldn't have any problems. The flanges from the rim keeps the chain in place and it rolls nicely as you apply the load. Best of luck!

I can tell you from several years of pulling rocks up out of the ground with my 2N that the way to go here in order to impress your wife ( which is more important than pulling up the bush ) what you need is a lever. Your hitch should go from flat on the ground to about 27" above the ground. Get a beam ( a 2x10 will work ) rest one end on the hitch, rest the other end on the ground beyond the bush, tie the bush to the beam while the beam is on/near the ground, lift the hitch. The bush will come along with the beam. It will. Remember that the beam acts as a multiplier of the lift capacity of the hitch. The farther the load is away from the tractor the greater the mechanical advantage. I have pulled 700lb rocks out of the ground with this method.

Dave's idea was a good one. Do you have a "spike" type root waterer? If you could inject some water down a foot or two it might loosen things up.

What about using a 1/4" or 3/8" cable (wire rope) with hooks, and pull straight up with the three point? The advantage of a cable is that you can tighten around a group of plants like a noose, and the harder you pull up the tighter it gets. You could also look at pulling up just a few stems at a time, though if they share the same root system that might not accomplish much.

Let us know what method you use to resolve this problem! Also, let us know how you get the bushes out.

Poor the water to the ground around the bush to soften it up. Then make up something to save face. Good luck, you'll need it!!! How does that old saying go, Oh what a wicked web we weave, when ???? to deceive. Can't remember the whole thing, but be carefull!!

I've seen some pretty inocent looking bushes but
from what you describe you may only be seeing the tip of the iceberg.Try some of these other methods
first but it aint worth killin you're tractor to impress the wife. If you think your beatin on it
you probably are. Get the pick and shovel and
dig around it and cut some of those roots.
And don't kill the Ford.

Some years ago I was trying to pull a little 2" Ash out of the edge of a field with my 39 9N. With a mighty jerk, I pulled away only to have stripped all the bark from the bottom to the very top, the tree was completely skinned and the chain had a wad of wet bark tangled in it.
I left the tree standing for a couple of years to remind me of my failure, tho i had pulled many a tree with that tractor.
