Recommendations for a larger utility than a 55/550

I keep breaking my 55. Loader work. I need a bigger tractor. My baler is too big for the 55. My snowblower is too big for my 55. My loader won't lift enough weight. It's not diesel.

So, what tractor would YOU recommend? I've been thinking a 1650 diesel and swap the 38's to 28's and an industrial/wheatland front axle, but are there any other obvious ones I'm missing? FWA would be nice, but I don't know that I want to pay that much. It needs to be capable of a loader that'll do at least 2000 lbs in the bucket. It'd be nice to have at least 55-60 hp. Easy starting too.

How about a Ford 860? Those are around 45 hp if I remember right. Tough tractor from what I saw of the one my grandfather had. Price may be a problem though. His brought $3500 and it was nothing to look at, and that was over 10 years ago!

No that won't work. Just noticed your post about thinking 55 hp or more. 1550 would be a good choice. I know a local farmer has a 684 IH that runs a NH 311 baler (without kicker) well.

A lot of talk below about the larger Fiat builts, good tractor,a LITTLE tough to get parts for if you need them in a hurry. I like Js idea about the 1550-1555 utility. I've kicked myself several times for not buying the one that I saw at an auction several years ago. That would be my first choice if I could find one.

I think I'd recommend the 1650 over the 1550- I had a 1550 for many years, and the transmission has straight cut gears or some such, that makes is virtually impossible to get out of gear if you're in any kind of a bind, unless you shift the Hydra-Power into low range. 1650 does not have that problem. Got to be a pain, esp. for loader work, where you're continually shifting from forward to reverse. Really not much difference in size between them, but neither is really handy for loader work.

I have a 1550 row crop utility. Glad to know mine isn't the only one that shifts hard out of gear.

If the 1650 is too big for this sort of thing, should I step back a bit and look at 880/S88 industrials? A bit smaller? Did those come with the hydrapower or shuttle shifts like the later ones?

Did they make a 1650 utility though? Not saying they didn't,just never saw nor heard of one. Problem with just going to smaller tires is that the gear ratio will still be the same and it will be so slow.

880 and S88 are physically about the same size as a 1650. I don't think they made utility versions of any of the 4 digit Olivers- that's why they went to the Fiat Olivers, to bridge the gap between the relatively small 550, and the 4 digit models. 880 did have a "shift on the go" high low, don't recall what they called it, but it was a sprag clutch, not hydraulic. If you shifted on the go, esp. from low to high, they didn't last long- but if you clutched when changing the 2 speed, it worked fine, and was certainly easier than shifting transmission gears.

Masssey 202 Workbull, think of a MF 35 on serious steroids. My 202 would pick up my S55 but definitely not the other way.

Bizzare but true, Case T/L/B's seem to be the weapon of choice. 4WD is common, take off the hoe and hang a ton of weight, and they'll pick up about anything. They come from 530 (40hp, 4000#) all the way up to tubo'd 100+hp 12,000# beasts.

A 1655 or 2-70 is a nice tractor but not super handy in tight places. the Fiats, if maintained the least bit and not speed shifted, are pretty tough. The later ones do have parts availability, the 1250's are the no-nos.

Maybe the wrong color but how about a 656 IH with the hydro? You can get it in utility or row crop gas or diesel. It'd be perfect for a snow blower, baler and loader. I've loaded round bales with a 656 and loader no sweat. For Oliver I'd go 1655 or 1755 and have the over under that also doesn't free wheel going down hill.

Over/under will freewheel in the low range.

A 1365 or 2-60 is way more tractor than a 55 or 550 if you want to stay with a utility. heavier front axle, and they had a bolt on auxillary hydraulic pump to run a loader. they will make 60-70 horse, more if you turn the pump up. 4X4 parts for them are kind of hard to come up with though.

Find you a nice 1265/1270 or 1365/1370 Oliver/White. You wont find a better utility tractor. Just remeber that some of it's gears are synchronized and some are'nt. Otherwise, they are tough utility tractors.

Yech. I'd not really been considering a Fiat tractor. I don't think I want the part hassles. I don't see very many of those at all. I know they're hard to come by parts.

How about a 1550/1555 Low wheel utility tractor?

If you don't want to go much bigger (44hp) or more expensive, a late 550 Industrial (= White 2-44) that came with a 588 loader will lift a whole lot more and quicker than a Super 55.

I'd like more HP than a 550 is going to give. I'll still have my S55 diesel even if I ditch the 55 gas loader tractor. My farm is mainly horse maintenance, manure, and baling/raking. I'd been thinking a 1650 with the smaller tires would be nice, but I haven't driven one in 25 years and don't remember what they can do. The baler does kick the 55's butt though. I need at least 55 hp I think.
