I currently have a straight pipe on my 1650 gas and am just wondering what everybody thinks about that. Is it better for the engine to have a muffler on there? Is it needed or is a straight pipe ok? I have heard a straight pipe will give you a little more HP, breathes easier I guess. What do you guys think?

I agree with OLD, the exhaust air that comes out of the muffler or pipe is under a small amount of pressure. As it leaves the muffler or pipe it compresses the outside air and if the pipe short, then you get the results of the compressed air as it travels up and outward. As for hearing, some cabs are a lot louder than a pipe exhaust. I would suggest to get the straight pipe long enuf to be taller than you as you sit on the seat. That would get the compressed air up above you. HTH

Did I say that right, OLD?

I'm probably all wet here, usually am,but I thought they needed a certain amount of back pressure from a muffler. Heard a straight pipe was a little harder on valves. Don't know, just what I'd been told over the years.

Back pressure and causing valve problem is a old wives tail. The only way the valve can get hurt is if the cold/cool air can get to the hot valves when its running and that can only happen if the exhaust manifold is not on the engines

A straight pipe is definitely cheaper. If you want a good quality muffler you will have to pay the price at an Agco dealer. The aftermarket mufflers made by Stanley are a lot cheaper but not near as good as oem.

Straight pipe is ok but not good for the ears. It will not help or hurt. Now if you look at most tractor mufflers they are glass packs or very close as in you can look in one end and see out the other so they have little or no back pressure so a straight pipe does nothing more then make it louder

Do you wear hearing protection? Does the tractor get used near anyone not using hearing protection?

The small amount of extra power, or not, for a few hours, days or weeks in time, is insignicant when considered against loss of hearing for the rest of a lifetime.

BTW try searching the archives as there are loads of related postings. Subject comes up again and again, then again and again.
