That depends on several things, but I think it is high. $3,500 might sound more reasonable or someplace in the middle.

I have 2 880's and I swear by them (sometimes at them). The thing that has given most people serious probelms is the power booster system. This often fails and is a pain to fix. They are really a tough tractor and you should have no problems in a hay operation.

In line with what gordey posted, there were two transmissions in the 880 tractors, a sliding spur gear design and the later had a constant mesh helical gears.  Look at the serial number tag on the lower LH side of the dash support.  There are two rows of numbers, the upper is the Specification number and lower is the Serial Number.  If the first two digits in the Specification number is 38 it has a spur gear transmission. 48 is a helical transmission.  The helical should have a lube pump and filter.  If it is a early tractor it should have a conversion pkg installed. The pump will be on the front of the counter shaft and filter under the floor panel on the LH side.

If you are operating in quite hilly conditions and the pump is on the front of the transmission, going up hill it can run out of oil.  Be sure the fluid level is full or even overfull is better.

The transmission can be weak and make a lot of noise.
