My 1550 Diesel has a recurrent valve sticking
problem. Just got er goin for the spring, and
she's chuffing again. Darn. I hate the thought of
pulling the head each time a valve sticks. One of
my tractor aquaintences here sold his 1550 for
that very reason. Is there some sort of long term
solution to keep them freed up? Any help would be
appreciated, thanks.

btw, I am NOT selling mine!

I had the same problem. The tractor had overheated before i got it.Had to replace the block and had the head done over new valve guides. The same vales kept sticking. The only solution that worked was to replace the springs on the ones that where sticking. This can be done by tapping an old energy cell cap to fit a air hose. Use the air presaure to hold up the vale while you exchange the parts.Weak springs are common if the engine has been heated.Valves stuck open can be pulled up.

I have been fighting this problem in a 880 for a couple years now. I talked to a lot of mechanic's but finally one knew exactly what I was talking about. Mine would jump push rods out of position under heavy load ,work great all day hit a clay knoll and head for the shed ! I was told the carbon builds up on valve stem and causes the valve to stick open letting pushrod jump out. He told me that he had fixed lots of oliver diesels years ago . The solution ; back drill the valve guide on bottom and as the carbon builds up this acts as a carbon breaker all new guides come this way [I,m told] . After pulling head the guides were back drilled , and a minor resurface of valves was done when it was apart . He could not find any problems with ,springs or valves just carbon. I did find one bent pushrod but that didn,t surprise me the amount of times last fall I had the problem . Now the only thing is I did the head last winter and have not had any time on it to see if it cures this problem. Hope this helps
