Does anyone know why or if it makes a difference on the install of the oil pump as to the top where the distributor shaft is connecting? I understand that is to be left to right why should it matter if large setion is on top or bottom.
Any clues would be greatly appreciated

The oil pump must be timed correctly with the cam gear as it drives the distributor. There is an offset tongue on the distributor that goes into the female groove in the top of the oil pump, which is how the distributor is driven. If you have lost track of how the gear teeth were meshed, and/or the engine has been turned over, you will need to get the number 1 cylinder at top dead center on the compression stroke (I would turn over by hand and pull at least the #1 spark plug),pull the dist. cap off, get the rotor in the correct position to fire number one cylinder, then note the position of the drive on the bottom and match the oil pump to this. Good luck, dwm

I would guess it's to make the roter point to the front, so its closer to the number one plug.
