I am preparing to buy my first tractor, primary use will be Landscaping and managment of 8 Acres surrounding new house,1 acre garden and 2/10ths mile of gravel drive.I have found a 1964 oliver 550 appears to be in good condition overall,2nd owner is asking $3000. Oliver is not very popular in this area but this tractor is about $2000.00 cheaper than similar condition 600 series fords in this area. any input would be appreciated.

Well, I have a 550 and a 1962 Ford 4000, which is essentially an 800 series. The Ford pulls stronger, with a few more HP, but the Oliver is a more sophisticaed tractor with better brakes and steering. Also the PTO system is easier to use. It's clear that the 550 was designed to correct shortcomings of the Ford. One point is that the 26" tires of the Oliver are more costly than the 28" tires of the Ford. I use and like them both, so you can't go wrong either way.

I have a 550 gas very simular to yours that i am restoring, i have a small produce farm and as of now it is the only tractor that i use, my grandad used it on his dairy farm for years, the external hydralics would be on the right side of the hydralic/transmission houseing. yes they are expensive to get if you dont have them, the only trouble i have is parts are fairly hard to find, but, Malibach Tractors in Ohio does a pretty good job of getting me most of the parts i cant get from our local NAPA store. good luck

There are pros and cons to both. I favor the 550, but parts may a bit harder to find close by. You can still get most of the parts, but maybe not in your town. Sounds like it will be getting light duty anyhow. It's an excellent tractor. I have a Super 55 that is the older brother and I love it. I use it for landscaping and small jobs around my place, but I plan on restoring it. That's because in my opinion Olivers are worth restoring. The 600 series Fords are about the same power , slighty smaller engine134 ci as compare to the 550's 155ci. The three 600 models were the 640 four speed with non-live PTO ( I wouldn't consider that one) the 650 with 5 speed and non-live PTO (wouldn't consider that one either) and the 660 with a 5 speed and this does have a live PTO. The 550 has the live pto and you really shouldn't bother with any tractor that doesn't have it. Now, is your 550 a diesel, does it have external hydraulics, does it have power steering, thoes are things that can influence the value of that tractor.

If you are considering a front end loader, I highly recommend that you find a tractor with power steering. The external hydraulics are expensive if can find the control ($500) . Consider that and of course the live pto, with any tractor you purchase.
