I am having problems with shifting my 88 into 4th gear. It will go partially in but not stay engaged unless I hold the shifter in place. It doesn't feel like it is going far emough into gear. There aren't any unusual noises and the other gears work fine. Any suggestions on what might be wrong and how to fix it would be appreciated.

Thank you,
A.P.

Take care,

If you aren't interested in pulling the cover first off. You could remove the cup in the front of the tranny. It sets under the hood directy in front of the shifter. Put it in fourth and see if the shift rod comes out as far as the other rods.
If it does, remove the screw in the interlock plate that the cup is screwed down to. Make sure the spring isn't broke and the interlock ball bearing is in place. If everthing is right, pull the cover and work the shifting forks by hand. If everything moves properly look for wear on the gear or the shaft the gear slides on or the bearings the shafts idle on.

I don't know if 88's forks were bolted to the rails on a 55-550 2 1/4 bolts held them in place and being loosened 2 turns would cause this to happen.

OLIVER HAD THE SAME PROBLEM ON THEIR SUPER 77 DIESEL THERE WERE 2 SEPERATE SHIETING FORK CLUSTERS oNE FOR REVERSE. there were two REVERSES. AND TWO FOR THE OTHER 6 GEARS. ONE FOR I-3,AND ONE FOR 4-6. YOUR PROBLEM CAN BE OVER COME BY REMOVING THE TRANSMISSION COVER AND ADJUSTING THE LARGE ADJUSTING SET SCREW LABLED 4-6, and turn IT TO TJE RiGHT UNTIL THE 4TH GEAR SHIFT FULLY ENGAGRS. YOU WILL NEED TO RE-INSYALL A GASKET. USE ANUMBER 4 CORK, AND LOADS OF PERMATEX. THE SUPER 88 DIESEL ALSO HAD HYDRALIC PRESSURE PROBLEMS.

Shouldn't you be out chasing the flywheel from your putt-putt tractor? You know the one that always comes loose unless they weld it on or use a taperlock conversion to hold it on? Now that's the "pinacle" of two cylinder perfection.

Take care,
A.P.

My 520 and 620 are Gas. It's the Diesel that have the flywheel problem. Also if you run the engine down to the last and chocke it off. Hey! this is bad for any engine. 1,2,3,4,6
cylinder. A friend of mine goes to pulls with his IH 1206 the crankshaft broke off.The flywheel come out of the clutch housing, and hit a truck. I also have a friend that has a Oliver with a Perkins engine. The crankshaft broke in 2 places.
When i bought my 4020 i tried a MF super 90 the MF dealer told me they put a new crankshaft in it because it was broke.
I know the man who bought this super 90 He had it 2 years, and the crankshaft broke again.

Also they don't have to weld them on,they should use Loctite. At a Two Cylinder meeting,we had a man from Loctite tell us all about it. Loctite is really good to use,on all tractors. green red blue or orange.

It is true that many engines can break a crank of whatever color but that wasn't what I was talking about. Unfortunately in the past some people got real creative (?frustrated?)in trying to fix the problem of the two cylinder tractors.

I have seen two that were welded on. The present owners were left with the task of trying to fix it. The fix didn't involve just using Loctite but involved using the "Taperlock" (spelling/name might not be quite correct)device/system.

Any engine configuration (2,3, 4, 5,6&8 cylinder) can have problems. The two cylinders have some very real ones because of the uneven firing impulses. That can cause some very real problems on some belt and pto loads/equipment.

We all have our favorites (and biases). You stay with your favorite brand of green tractor and I'll stick with mine and we will both be much happier for it. See you at the pulls.

Take care,
A.P.
