A friend of mine just purchased a WHITE 2-180 series 3 FWD and was wondering what watch for as far as problems.
Are their any week points he should keep a eye on he has two 2255s so he is familiar with the Cat motor .
Could you put in a Cummings motor in this tractor without a lot work to the frame etc? Thanks AL

Hi, Al! The 2-180 is a good horse! Especially if it is a PFA. The Series III tractors were really nice to operate. Yes, you can install a C series Cummins in one, but it costs big bucks. A White dealer in Nebraska told me several years ago that he had installed the 225 horse turbo Cat in over a dozen of these, with no trouble. To do that, you will have to shorten the fuel tank, and insulate the front of it, to keep the turbine heat away from the tank. I have worked on a friends 4-225, and I can testify that the turbo engine is smoother and quieter than the non-turbo. Best to swap for the proper engine at a Cat dealer, rather than trying to add a turbo on to an NA engine. Best wishes! Merlin

I wish I could find someone to buy my 2-180. I would take an Oliver on trade! WB.

No it's not a MFWD. 1978 model. West central IN. Go to www.deertracs.com to see my ad and some pictures. Thanks, John.

Dear Wrenchbender, Hi! Would you consider trading your 2-180 for a 1950-T PFA with a Cummins? What year is your 2-180? We used to have one, a 1978 model, and we loved it! Merlin

I have a 2255 that is turned up and is running around 225hp and the over/under is not a problem, although the clutch is. The 2-180 should not have any clutch problems because they have a 13 inch double disc in. We also have a White 2-150 with a turbo on that is running about the same HP. We are going to be putting the 2-180 clutch in both of these tractors to fix the slipping the clutch problem. I wouldn't be afraid to put a turbo on the 2-180 and run 225Hp out of it pulling a 5000 gallon tanker up over our hills in PA. We run our 2255 in 5th direct pulling our tanker up over some pretty good hills. I would like to get a 2-180 FWD sometime; I left a good cheap one go about a month ago for $10,000 with new A/C, and paint with about 4000 hours on it. I was told that the C/V joints were a weak link between the differential and the tire. They can be retrofitted with universal joints.

Al the 2-180 is a good solid tractor of the weak points to watch for are probably the over under transmission and the clutch. You should try to avoid a lot of shifting under a heavy load. Make sure to change the Over and Under oil every year at the minimum even if he does not put on very many hours always change it in the spring. I hope this helps Good Luck Shadetree.
