Adding Power Steering To An Oliver 77

I was recently discussing my addition of power steering to my Oliver 77 Industrial with a fellow on another section of this site. I thought there might be some interest here on my successful installation so I set up a web page showing it.

I used a Char-Lynn torque generator and priority valve, using my existing main hydraulic pump for the power source. I just could not find adequate room to mount an automotive type belt driven pump. I also did not want to install a generator/pump combo since I had converted to an alternator system a long time ago. Furthermore, I did not want to go with an old Oliver pwr str gear since that space was too tight, having been taken over by a custom mounted, crank-driven main hydraulic pump.

What a difference, especially with a full front bucket! I now wish I had done it years ago.

Hi there evielboweviel,

The Char-Lynn torque generator (called steering valve) is item #9-1848 for $399.50 + shipping. The priority valve (w/relief) is item #9-4158 for $78.95 + shipping. These are 2002 prices. The hydraulic hose and fittings, etc. are available at local hydraulic supply companies...also NAPA. You have to custom fabricate some kind of bracket to mount the torque generator and to keep it from turning. I used 1/4" steel plate. You'll also need a couple of universal joints to install in the existing steering shafting, together with a new, longer section of shafting from the steering box to the torque generator. These are available at any local power transmission supplier. As I recall, I paid about $50 for the U-joints and about #20 for the keyed shafting. All in all, figure on about $650 if you do the labor yourself.

The numbers for the generator and priority valve are from Surplus Center, Lincoln, NE. I don't believe they have a web site. Call them at 1-800-488-3407 and request a catalog...lots of good stuff :o).

A word of caution: The torque generator takes about 3 gpm to work. The priority valve supplies this BUT it is robbed continuously from your main hydraulic supply. You need to have plenty of supply to begin with. My main hydraulic pump is about 20 gpm so I am now reduced to about 17 gpm to run other equipment. My loader is noticeably slower but I consider the ease of the power steering to be worth it. If you don't have a main system that you are willing to take 3 gpm away from permanently, you will need to find a solution other than the priority valve. Or repace your main pump with something bigger. The quick fix is an old power steering pump and reservoir from a car or truck dedicated for the power steering...but you need to find a place to mount it and drive it. The torque generator is rated at 1000 psig, although I run mine at the 1500 max psig preset relief of the priority valve without problems. My main system runs around 1200 psig.

Very nice installation, and spiffy web page (great pictures, and the spiral notebook is a nice touch! :>)
