Hello all. I have a diesel 1850 with the two 6 volt batteries. Has any body had any luck trading the two 6's for one 12 volt battery? The new batteries tend to pack more amps in them than they did in 1967. I was just wondering if it was worth the effort to make the change.

I bought an 1850 that had been swapped over to two 12V 700 cold cranking amp batteries. The tractor started all winter long with out trouble(at least until a bad regulator cooked the batteries). The temperature can get down to -40 here. I did not find it was neccessary to go with a higher CCA rating. The 12V 1850 cranked much easier than my other three units with the original 6 V set up and higher net CCA ratings. I will be upgrading all of my tractors to 12V as the 6V's die off. My tractors are parked outside or in unheated shops and all I used was a 110V circulating block heater.

Thanks Alberta Dave.
I understand you put in TWO 12 volt batteries? If you are in alberta Canada I can see why. The current charging system keeps the TWO batteries charged up? And how about the wiring? Does the 24 Volts burn it up?

Thanks

You don't need two 12 volt batteries. The guys who use two 12 volt batteries have them hooked in parallel; which keeps the voltage the same and adds the amperage of the two batteries together. The original set up with two 6 volts was hooked in series; which is the sum of the voltage of the two batteries and the amperage stays the same. Like I said, all you need is an Interstate 31P-MHD; which has 950 cold cranking amps. It starts our 1850s at 20 below.

Thanks to all of you who helped me out. I was having problems getting my 1850 to start but I believe I have it tracked to a bad solinoid. It appears to be the original solinoid so that makes it around 35 years old. I guess I can afford to put one on if the next one lasts half that long. I believe I will still make the change to a single 12 volt when the 2 sixes give it up. kwg

We did that to our 3 1850s here in New York. We put in the Interstate 31P-MHD. It has 950 CCA.
